Furniture restoration and Repair
Breathing new life into a piece is not a quick process, but it is well worth the effort when you have a beautiful furniture item to enjoy for years to come.
There is a certain amount of wear and tear that is expected in old furniture. In the trade it is known as ‘character’ and it is what makes furniture unique. Restoration is important but you need to know what and how much to restore, and when to stop!
Here at Fabrik Iguana, we are very much about sympathetic restoration rather than full-on restoration particularly when it comes to antique furniture. We feel it is important to take time to date furniture and work out how each piece was first crafted. It is very important to follow all the same techniques and use the same materials that were around when a piece was originally made and use the least intrusive procedures. By preserving as much of the original methods and materials as possible we can retain the integrity of any antique piece we work on.
We are happy to advise you on what we think is the best course of action in terms of the level of restoration, what is possible and what to expect. Sometimes restoring old furniture can be as easy as giving a piece a good clean to cut through the layers of dirt and wax on the surface. Nearly all old or damaged finishes on furniture can be stripped back to bare wood and can be re-polished to its original, as-new condition. Even a dark finish can be lightly stained to give a modern finish and a new lease of life. So please get in touch.
What can you repair?
We can repair most superficial damage to furniture such as scrapes, chips, scratches, dents, etc. We are also able to remove common marks caused by things like water, coffee cups, and sun damage. We can fix wobbly legs, replace glass, redo lining, basically anything that needs to be done to bring your piece of furniture back to its former glory.
We can repair most working parts i.e. windup mechanisms on large dining tables, locks, and moving parts. However, more severe damage would need to be assessed for repair. Replacing large parts of a piece of furniture or requiring replica parts to be made can be expensive.
Do you do Upholstery?
We do not offer an upholstery service here at Fabrik Iguana, but we will undertake small upholstery jobs as part of period furniture restoration where required.
We are happy to advise on enquiry.
